Like most people born in the mid 1960’s, the thought to “geaux organic” [go organic] never crossed our minds. As a child and young adult, I didn’t give much thought to chemical exposure to my body, and neither did my parents.
This was the era of trusting that our government “had our backs” when it came to product safety, medical or farming practices, and untainted food.
While young and naive, I ran or biked as fast as I could to catch the mosquito-fogger, just to be in its cloud.
When the crop-dusters flew over my grandparents vegetable fields, I stopped to look up in awe, wishing I could fly with the plane, as the “dust” settled all around me.
Popping tar-bubbles on the asphalt road in the heat of summer, with my bare feet, felt as fulfilling as snapping plastic bubble-wrap between my fingers. Flying cockroaches brought out the “video-gamer” in me, as I chased them with the most effective, ahem… most toxic pesticide on the market, even as my bones literally ached when I sprayed.
Summers were spent in chemical-laced swimming pools, some so out of balanced that my bathing suit bleached out in a single dip. And, my teeth started to fill up with “silver fillings” [mercury or amalgam] at age 11, ushering in migraines that could stop a train.
Yet, one thing I did know early on, cigarette smoke from my father’s habit made me ill.
It wasn’t until years later that I realized the damaging effects that these common practices had on my liver and gut–my health, even though I stayed sick as a child and throughout my most of my adult years.
Migraines continued to haunt me for days, sometimes weeks, at a time. Strep throat and sinus infections came on every couple of months, and were then “remedied” by antibiotics.
This cycle did a number on the eco-system of my gut, creating more chronic issues, along with life-threatening reactions to environmental situations and common medical practices.
By the time I entered a university for post-graduate work, I was required to take the mandated vaccines of the early 1990’s. I recall a significant downward turn in my over-all health following those injections. (Though I had not connected the dots at that time.)
I eventually made a drastic change in my life, as God lead me out of the heat & humidity and moldy everything, and living on the edge of “Chemical Alley” in South Louisiana.
In 2000, He moved me to the pristine air of the Northern Rocky Mountains to a place called Teton Valley. I felt much better while living there, yet I had my struggles.
A few years after my move, I took a dive into a health abyss. I spent more time in bed, than on my feet, and I didn’t know why. After months of lethargy, my chiropractor determined it was mercury poisoning, which negatively impacted my organs and glands.
It was this health crisis that pointed me to Tijuana, Mexico, and the dots started to really connect.
Too sick to hold a job, a friend offered me his food cart to earn money to get to Mexico. On the days I felt strong enough, I cooked and sold food on a street corner in Driggs, Idaho until I made enough money to get the help that I desperately needed.
I then traveled to Tijuana, Mexico to one of the top medical clinics in the world, all while staying alone at a mission campus in the worst part of the city. It was there I had 10 mercury fillings removed, followed by 6 days of IV Chelation Therapy.
On a daily basis, I met scores of people at this clinic who’d crossed the border for similar medical attention for various debilitating conditions.
Most of them were cancer patients who had been sent home to “die” north of the border. Yet, the care that was offered to these “hopeless cases” led to NO MORE CANCER for most.
And, the treatment options offered at this clinic cost a TINY fraction of what “treatment” would cost in the USA, even with insurance.
I’d also encountered others with chronic and debilitating health issues who’d been over-medicated with little, to no, relief. These people got their life back by making lifestyle changes and receiving the same treatments that I went through.
As the pieces of the puzzle came together, I realized that I was trying to thrive in an increasingly chemical world. With 81,000 new chemicals introduced into our lives since World War I, it’s a wonder anyone is able to vibrantly live.
My life-long exposures, including 15 years of studying and teaching Chemistry, all created the perfect storm. My inability to thrive had a name–Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. After this revelation, I knew life would never be the same.
I needed to Geaux Organic, in more ways than one, for my life.
Mexico was my “light-bulb” moment. I HAD to take control of my own health and daily life practices. I realized that something had gone terribly wrong with the “healthcare” system that I had trusted. Something took over our best interest and was turned over to “special interests.” That something is called greed.
In Mexico, I was given HOPE to live healthy…for the first time. I came back with hope to THRIVE, instead of barely survive.
Yet, a few years later I found myself laying flat again, in an even darker abyss. In 2008, I was blindsided by a pharmaceutical injection into my knee.
Hidden in the patent, and not disclosed, were very toxic ingredients that my liver could not process. Following this series of injections, I felt like the cockroaches I use to chase with pesticides, only this time, the one shaking and dying was me.
After 3.5 years of being mostly bedridden and under the medical care of a wonderful alternative medical clinic in Idaho. I begin to bounce back. After 5 years of being a patient of there, I began to thrive again, and even served as a missionary in Swaziland for almost 3 months with Children’s Cup.
A miracle, indeed. This clinic and it’s doctors will forever be held in the highest regard due to the commitment they made to see me through.
It’s been a battle to attain and maintain great health. Yet, it’s been doable with laser-beam intention on my part to–THRIVE. But, it’s been worth the quality of life it’s afforded me!
